People want to be happy. People want to be fulfilled in their work. People want to know that what they’re doing has meaning. And people would also like to be adequately rewarded for this so they can do other things they enjoy whilst supporting a family at the same time.

Lynda Williams

Happiness is not only a state of mind. It’s a state of body and spirit, because you feel sadness, doubt, disappointment, anxiety and fear in every cell of your being when things are not right.

nef

nef (the new economics foundation) is a British independent think-and-do tank that inspires and demonstrates real economic well-being.
We aim to improve quality of life by promoting innovative solutions that challenge mainstream thinking on economic, environmental and social issues. We work in partnership and put people and the planet first.
In July 2006, NEF launched the Happy Planet Index, intended to challenge existing indices of a state's success, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Human Development Index (HDI).

Forget about money. Don't fret about youth. Acting happy is likely to make you happy.

What makes for a happy disposition? Who are these people who stay basically up despite life's downs? There are four important traits of happy people:
  1. Self-esteem: happy people like themselves
  2. Optimism: happy people are hope-filled
  3. Extroversion: happy people are outgoing
  4. Personal Control: happy people believe they choose their destinies

Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

I have found that most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Logic suggests that having options allows people to select precisely what makes them happiest. But, as studies show, abundant choice often makes for misery.
Americans today choose among more options in more parts of life than has ever been possible before. To an extent, the opportunity to choose enhances our lives. It is only logical to think that if some choice is good, more is better; people who care about having infinite options will benefit from them, and those who do not can always just ignore the 273 versions of cereal they have never tried. Yet recent research strongly suggests that, psychologically, this assumption is wrong. Although some choice is undoubtedly better than none, more is not always better than less.

No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change.
