Yoshiaki Nagaya, a Japanese diplomat based at the consulate in San Francisco, was charged with 17 felony counts of domestic violence against his wife. … They said diplomatic immunity does not cover what a consulate official does in his private life. The district attorney said the message is simple. “There’s no corner of our society that is immune, number one, from this type of violence. Number two, there is no corner of this community where this type of violence is ignored.”

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A Japanese diplomat based at the consulate in San Francisco was charged with 17 felony counts of domestic violence against his wife when he made his first court appearance Monday at the courthouse in South San Francisco.

32-year-old Yoshiaki Nagaya, who resides in San Bruno, is accused of repeatedly beating his wife and pushing her out of a car.

“It ran from bruises all the way to a puncture wound from a screwdriver in her hand to a tooth being knocked out,” said San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.

Prosecutors said Nagaya attacked his wife, whose identity is not being released, 14 times over 14 months. The most recent incident took place just over a month ago.

“She finally decided she had had enough and had the courage to go forward to the police, report it and started this investigation,” said Wagstaffe.

Japanese consulate officials told KTVU Nagaya has been working as vice consul in San Francisco for two years.

They said they learned of the charges against Nagaya when he was arrested on April 1st. But that Nagaya will continue to work here while the court case against him develops. They said they will “wait for final judgment.”

They also said diplomatic immunity does not cover what a consulate official does in his private life.

The district attorney said the message is simple.

“There’s no corner of our society that is immune, number one, from this type of violence. Number two, there is no corner of this community where this type of violence is ignored,” said Wagstaffe.

Nagaya pleaded not guilty to all 17 felony counts of domestic violence. He is free on bail after posting $350,000 in cash and he is due back in court June 14th.

As for his wife, Wagstaffe would only say she has a restraining order against her husband and is cooperating with prosecutors.
