John Naisbitt
Although for me the changes were clearly under way, some of the new directions I saw seemed unlikely at the time. I risked displeasing the experts, who could have argued that describing the world in terms of shift ing categories would be too simplistic. But I thought it was worth the risk. I felt that in a world where events and ideas were analyzed to the point of lifelessness, where complexity grew by quantum leaps, where the information din was so high that one had to shriek to be heard above it, people were hungry for structure. With a simple framework, we could begin to make sense of the world. And we could change the framework, as the world itself changed.

There are two country groupings that emerge where shale gas development may appear most attractive.
The first group consists of countries that are currently highly dependent upon natural gas imports, have at least some gas production infrastructure, and their estimated shale gas resources are substantial relative to their current gas consumption. For these countries, shale gas development could significantly alter their future gas balance, which may motivate development. Examples of countries in this group include France, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, South Africa, Morocco, and Chile. In addition, South Africa's shale gas resource endowment is interesting as it may be attractive for use of that natural gas as a feedstock to their existing gas-to-liquids (GTL) and coal-to-liquids (CTL) plants.
The second group consists of those countries where the shale gas resource estimate is large (e.g., above 200 trillion cubic feet) and there already exists a significant natural gas production infrastructure for internal use or for export. In addition to the United States, notable examples of this group include Canada, Mexico, China, Australia, Libya, Algeria, Argentina, and Brazil. Existing infrastructure would aide in the timely conversion of the resource into production, but could also lead to competition with other natural gas supply sources. For an individual country the situation could be more complex.

The death penalty has so far been treated under the exception to the right to life provided for by international law. A “new approach” that puts the death penalty in the context of the prohibition of torture is required.
States need to re-examine their procedures under international law because the ability of States to impose and carry out the death penalty is diminishing as these practices are increasingly viewed to constitute torture.

Eternity (or forever) is endless time. It is often referenced in the context of religion, in the concept of immortality, whereby death is conquered, and people may live for an unlimited amount of time (cf. Heaven). The existence of gods or God is said to endure eternally and sometimes also the natural cosmos, in respect to both past and future.
By contrast, the concept of a mathematically infinite duration, is called sempiternity or everlasting. Whereas the eternal is said to be unchanging and outside time; a potentially sempiternal span of time can never come to pass in actuality. Aristotle argued that the cosmos has no beginning.

But could humankind really meet its end in 2012—drowned in apocalyptic floods, walloped by a secret planet, seared by an angry sun, or thrown overboard by speeding continents?
And did the ancient Maya—whose empire peaked between A.D. 250 and 900 in what is now Mexico and Central America—really predict the end of the world in 2012?
At least one aspect of the 2012, end-of-the-world hype is, for some people, all too real: the fear.

U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Missouri
Christjan Bee, 36, of Monett, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge James C. England to possessing obscenity.
On Aug. 8, 2011, Bee’s wife contacted the Monett Police Department and reported that she had found files she believed to be child pornography on a computer used by her husband. Police officers executed a search warrant at Bee’s residence and seized his computer.
During the forensic examination of Bee’s computer, a collection of electronic comics, entitled “incest comics,” were discovered on the computer. These comics contained multiple images of minors engaging in graphic sexual intercourse with adults and other minors. The depictions clearly lack any literary, artistic, political or scientific value.
Under the terms of today’s plea agreement, the government will recommend a sentence of three years in federal prison without parole. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

In Zen you sit for many months, sometimes years, before you become capable of listening. When you listen so totally that there is no thought arising, passing, coming and going, then the thinker disappears, and the listener disappears. The outside disappears, the inside disappears, and you are without boundary. It is a tremendous emptiness; nothing is, or, only nothing is; freedom is utterly complete; and you are in peace.

People are a lot more interested these days in “augmented reality,” or at least they are on Google where it surpassed “virtual reality” as a search term. Maybe people are searching for it more just because they are not sure what it means, but it definitely is entering the collective consciousness. If virtual reality is a complete immersion in a digital world, augmented reality is more a digital overlay onto the real world. It enhances the real world with digital data, and therefore it is much more interesting than a completely fabricated environment. There is an element of magic to augmented reality apps because they juxtapose data and graphics where they have no business showing up.

One can always dream or speculate around this secret account. Speculation begins there – and belief. But of the secret itself, there can be no archive, by definition. The secret is the very ash of the archive, the place where it no longer even makes sense to say “the very ash [la cendre même]“or “right on the ash [à même la cendre].” There is no sense in searching for the secret of what anyone may have known.

What was intimated in the radioactive culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries erupted at full force in Hiroshima and Nagasaki: if the atomic blasts and blackened skies can be thought of as massive cameras, then the victims of this dark atomic room can be seen as photographic effects. Seared organic and nonorganic matter left dark stains, opaque artefacts of once vital bodies, on the pavements and other surfaces of this grotesque theater. The “shadows”, as they were called, are actually photograms, images formed by the direct exposure of objects on photographic surfaces. Photographic sculptures. True photographs, more photographic than photographic images.

… a subculture that hasn’t gone away: the “Hillary Haters,” a loose-knit collection of virulently anti-Clinton activists who can’t wait to swiftboat her presidential bid. What unifies those who can’t bear the thought of a Madam President and are raising millions to stop her? Little to nothing, it seems.
The Clinton haters range from evangelicals who accuse her of lesbianism to Spago-dining Hollywoodites who call her “Nixon in drag.” The Stop Her Now website proclaims its mission as “Rescuing America from the radical ideas of Hillary Clinton”; a book illustrates her “superiority and arrogance” with photos of her changing hairstyles. Political unity is absent; the only constant is personal revulsion.

Hope is the bedrock of this nation. The belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be.
The same message we had when we were up and when we were down; the one that can save this country, brick by brick, block by block, callused hand by callused hand, that together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
Because we are not a collection of red states and blue states. We are the United States of America.

… differences in average income or living standards between whole populations or countries don’t matter at all, but income differences within those same populations matter very much indeed … what matters in rich countries may not be your actual income level and living standard, but how you compare with other people in the same society. Perhaps average standards don’t matter and what does is simply whether you are doing better or worse than other people …
… men have an incentive to achieve as high a status as possible because their sexual competitiveness depends on it … men use violence when their status is threatened, and more so when there is little status to defend. … The association between inequality and violence is strong and consistent. The evolutionary importance of shame and humiliation provides a plausible explanation of why more unequal societies suffer more violence.

A man from Chicago purchased a gallon of barbecue sauce intended for use on McDonald's McJordan sandwich in 1992 for $9,995.00 on eBay, according to the item's seller.
Though, to be fair, that was an excellent year for barbecue sauce: a truly wonderful vintage with some fine vinegars and delightfully complex tomato pastes and tannins.
Right. I have no idea what I'm talking about.

FuelCell Energy is one of a handful of companies investigating how to address one of the biggest barriers in trying to capture carbon dioxide from coal plants for later storage underground, an unproved concept. The problem is called parasitic load. It refers to the phenomenon that a typical carbon capture system requires a great deal of electricity and thus saps power from a power plant and can cause electricity costs to spike by 70 percent or more.
The Danbury company’s potential solution for this problem is fuel cells. The company says that fuel cells have the potential to essentially reverse parasitic load and cause a carbon capture system to generate as much as 40 percent more electricity for a power plant, rather than take away power.

Ms. Tina Brown announced that Newsweek would cease print publication at the end of the year and move to an all-digital format.
... it is not fair to blame Ms. Brown for all of Newsweek’s problems. She fought a losing battle ...
The decision to end the print edition “was always going to happen,” Ms. Brown said.
“It really has not been a question of if,” she said. “It was a question of when.”

We are announcing this morning an important development at Newsweek and The Daily Beast. Newsweek will transition to an all-digital format in early 2013. As part of this transition, the last print edition in the United States will be our Dec. 31 issue.
Currently, 39 percent of Americans say they get their news from an online source, according to a Pew Research Center study released last month. In our judgment, we have reached a tipping point at which we can most efficiently and effectively reach our readers in all-digital format. This was not the case just two years ago. It will increasingly be the case in the years ahead.
Newsweek is produced by a gifted and tireless team of professionals who have been offering brilliant work consistently throughout a tough period of ownership transition and media disruption. Regrettably we anticipate staff reductions and the streamlining of our editorial and business operations both here in the U.S. and internationally.
Exiting print is an extremely difficult moment for all of us who love the romance of print and the unique weekly camaraderie of those hectic hours before the close on Friday night. But as we head for the 80th anniversary of Newsweek next year we must sustain the journalism that gives the magazine its purpose—and embrace the all-digital future.

There’s more bullying, more incivility, more disrespect and even more relationship violence between us at home, at work, in our communities and in the news. And, it seems to be increasing rather than decreasing.
We have noticed a pattern to this behavior that is all too familiar. It generally includes:
• Personal Attacks (calling the other person crazy, stupid, immoral or evil)
• Crisis Emotions (which trigger fear and hatred of each other)
• All-or-Nothing Solutions (which call for the elimination or exclusion of the “other”)
• Narcissistic Behavior (acting superior and not caring about anyone else)
• Negative Advocates (constantly recruiting others to join in this hostility)
We are well-acquainted with this pattern in high-conflict divorces, and it’s not good. This behavior is called “high-conflict” because it increases the conflict, rather than reducing or resolving it. Worst of all, it’s contagious – it spreads when people are exposed to it, like a virus.
This behavior results in a state of mind called “splitting” – the psychological term for truly believing that certain people are absolutely all-bad and others are absolutely all-good, with no gray areas in between.

We never imagined, when we bought the place, that this day would come and we would actually sell our house, but after we left Austin to appease our wanderlust, it became all but inevitable. The sensation is something like reading a compelling book, one so enjoyable that putting it down is not an option, even though you know you are hurtling from the front cover to the back cover, and when you reach it, it will be over. Personally, I find this both exhilarating and saddening because, while the house has been something of a friend to us (we occupied it for four years before renting it out), the end of this particular book is in sight, inevitable and unavoidable.

… This speaks to a fundamental way of conceptualizing and theorizing the Internet specifically, and spaces and places generally: that digital and material realities dialectically co-construct each other. For example, social networking sites (e.g., MySpace, Facebook) are not separate from the physical world, but rather they have everything to do with it, and the physical world has much to do with digital socializing. No longer can we think of a “real” world opposed to being “online”. Instead, we need to think with a paradigm that centers on the implosion of the worlds of bits and atoms into the augmented reality that has seemingly become ascendant.

Where to invest to recover from the major losses in our retirement plans since 2008? The emerging markets, if you can sleep at night, that is. The emerging markets aren’t as crazy risky as they used to be, but they are still higher beta assets than any developed market security. That means a 10% decline in the S&P 500 means around a 15% decline or more for emerging market stocks. However, the long term growth story of the big emerging markets in particular remains in tact. Despite the U.S. downgrade and European sovereign debt crisis, Brazil, Russia, India and China are set to be the drivers of global growth.

Even the most optimistic scenario does not foresee a recovery in Japan’s economy until the second quarter of next year.
What we have ahead of us is going to be terrible. It’s like last year’s disaster all over again.
The quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan last year hobbled the economy for months. Auto production was particularly hard hit because parts suppliers had been located in the disaster area. Flooding in Thailand that followed added to the automakers’ woes. They had only bounced back toward the end of last year, after months of rebuilding.
