Alex Garland

Even after he'd switched his light off, twenty or so minutes later, I still couldn't get back to sleep. I was too keyed up, too much stuff was running through my head. Beaches and bitches, exhaustion; jumpy with adrenaline. Perhaps, given an hour of silence, I might have relaxed, but soon after the man's light went out the French couple came back to their room and started having sex.

  1. This novel takes the reader from Bangkok to a beautiful, idyllic beach in the Gulf of Thailand, untouched by civilization and tourism. While Garland's beach doesn't exist, the landscapes that served him as inspiration can be described as nothing less than breathtaking. But beyond that, Garland gives a vivid description of backpacking through Thailand, and of the country's geography that is simply a trip in itself.
