This gloomy picture raises a profound problem for anyone in politics: “If I don’t win, I can’t make a difference, so I have to do whatever it takes to win.” ...
The issues are complicated and people just don’t have the time to understand them. “I’ve worked all day, so forget global warming and the debt ceiling and bring on dinner already.“ They are attracted to a leader who appears to have the answers, and the more certain the leader appears the better, even if that leader is wrong! It’s the easy way out, and who can blame them? They don’t have the time. But wait, they have time to stream hours of their favorite shows, they text endlessly, and invest solid time in social media. “It has been more profitable for us to bind together in the wrong direction than to be alone in the right one. Those who have followed the assertive idiot rather than the introspective wise person have passed us some of their genes. This is apparent from a social pathology: psychopaths rally follower.” – Nicholas Taleb, The Black Swan
ReplyDeleteThis gloomy picture raises a profound problem for anyone in politics: “If I don’t win, I can’t make a difference, so I have to do whatever it takes to win.” And there you have the birth of another psychopath or, more likely, another politician behaving like one. Politics as usual, dog eat dog, take no prisoners. The public swears they hate it and yet they still respond to it. One party screamed to Solomon to go ahead and cut the baby in half and got away with it! So, do you really have a choice? Why is it like this?

People can love others who are open-minded and ready to change their minds as their world changes. Who doesn’t love George Bailey in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’? But that’s possible only if you have seen the whole movie, seen him progress. Reality TV has made the most boring and insipid people interesting and viewers are willing to spend hours engrossed. It’s because the viewers are given that inside look, and that fourth wall is removed, allowing them to see the process and become invested in the story. You can make yourself watchable with the tools out there. You can give the world that inside view of your life with the new media and suck them in. You don’t have to be dogmatic. You don’t have to go negative. You can have the time to present the whole story and be who you really want to be: one of the good guys.
