New York City originated as New Amsterdam, in the state of New Netherland, in the mid-1600s and prospered into the sprawling metropolis it is today through a combination of reform movements, comprehensive city planning initiatives introduced in the nineteenth century, nonpartisan municipal commissions, and the ceaseless lure of commerce.
